Sunset

She falls to the ground;
he stomps on her with his feet.
And she makes no sound,
as she acknowledges defeat.

She spills golden water,
first a stream, and then a flood.
He begins his merciless slaughter,
and the sky fills with red blood.

A deep crimson fills the night,
surrounded by jet black.
She is now a pinprick of light,
fighting off his relentless attack.

At long last she falls away;
he yells his triumphing cry.
Night finally conquers Day,
color is gone in the blink of an eye.

One by one, the stars fill the sky,
and the darkness near them disappears.
Tear by tear, she begins to cry,
splattering the sky with golden tears.

Even though he has his way,
she feels little sorrow.
She says, “I’ll let you have today,
but we’ll see about tomorrow.”
